서울시립미술관 1층에서 2016 SeMA Blue(청년작가 전시)_<서울 바벨>(2016.1.19-4.5)이 열렸다. <서울 바벨>은 2014~2015년에 우후죽순 생겨났던 신생공간/아티스트런스페이스 총 17팀(약 70여명의 기획자, 작가)이 참여한 전시이다. 5미터 가량의 넓지 않은 공간을 부스삼아 각 플랫폼에서 소개된 작가들의 작품을 선보였다. 참여자가 많은 만큼 혼란스러운 분위기였지만, 전반적인 분위기는 확인할 수 있는 자리였다. 개별 작가보다는 플랫폼의 이름이나 구분이 먼저 눈에 들어오는 구조였다. 오프닝에 참석해 떠들석한 축제의 광경을 목도하고 나오면서 왠지 모를 군중 속의 고독감을 느꼈다. 2014년 연말 <청춘과 잉여> 기획자라는 명분으로, 도록에 사건 일지 식의 리포트를 썼다. 2015년에 나는 지극한 슬럼프를 보내며 심신의 안정을 취하는 데 주력했다. 철저한 방관자로 보내 온 1년이었기에, 글을 쓸 자격이 과연 내게 있는지 여러 번 자문했다. 나는 참여자들처럼 직접 공간을 운영하지도, 작품을 출품하지도, 행동하지도 않았다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 동 세대 작가들의 이같은 노력을 응원하는 마음 반, 기획자/비평의 부재에 대한 책임의식 반으로 어렴풋한 생각들을 그러모으기 시작했다. 자의 반 타의 반으로 연관된 여러 가지 일들에 관한 정리 없이 새로운 시작을 하기는 어려웠기 때문이다. 온라인에서 여러 사람들의 짧은 리뷰들을 읽다가, 기고자(@kigoja_seoul)와 regina(@reginashine)의 트윗을 봤다. 이 둘은 제도권과 예술 생산 플랫폼의 관계맺기가 이뤄졌던 선례 세 가지를 언급하고 있었다. 관심이 생겨 세개의 전시를 찾아보게 됐다.
1. 광주비엔날레 <멈춤 1> 2002. 3. 29-6. 29

현대미술은 단순한 오브제의 제시 혹은 설치의 범주를 넘어서 다양한 장르 의 복합적 구성으로 나타나고 있다. 이번 프로젝트 1에는 새로운 국제 비엔날레의 모습을 제시하고자 한다. 세계 각 국의 대표적인 대안공간들을 '셀프 큐레이팅' 방식으로 직접 참가하게 하여 미술의 제도와 조직, 그리고 미술과 사회 간의 관계에 대한 새로운 대안 제시를 시도하고 파빌리온을 설치하여 관람객들에게 예술작품으로서의 휴식처를 제공한다. 그리고 개별작가들의 작품을 대안공간과 파빌리온 사이에 개입시켜 하나의 살아있는 문화 현장으로 재탄생 시킨다.

2. Rooseum Center for Contemporary Art <Baltic Babel-cities on a nervous coast> 2002. 9. 20-11.17
기획 : 찰스 에셔 (광주비엔날레에서 아이디어를 얻어서 스웨덴 가서도 함.
A large-scale group project about art and the new Baltic society that might now be in development. 10 independent, innovative organisations, groups or activities will be invited from the watershed Baltic cities of Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki, Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius, St Petersburg, and Warsaw. These organisations will be concerned with art and culture though they could be also involved in other independent political, social or cultural activities. Such groups of artists have emerged as the key force in art making as artists have developed alternative strategies to negotiate a different basis for making institutions, negotiating the relationship between art and society and reflecting the position of art in relation to globalism. The huge political changes that have occurred around the Baltic in the past 12 years have effected art and its possibilities, Young artists want to instigate independent alternative spaces so that they can continue to exist in the places they are committed to without leaving for the presumed centers or being dominated by the market and central institutions. This development is a very beautiful metaphor for the power of negotiation between globalized economic power and all kinds of effort to provide alternative solutions and local responses.

NO SOUL FOR SALE is a festival of independents that brings together the most exciting not-for-profit centers, alternative institutions, artists’ collectives and underground enterprises from around the world. NO SOUL FOR SALE celebrates the people who contribute to the international art scene by inventing new strategies for the distribution of information and new modes of participation.
